KNUST recognized that distance education is a valuable way to provide education to students who cannot attend traditional on-campus classes. Therefore, the KNUST Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) was established to offer programs of study online. By the start of the 2015-2016 academic year, the IDL was offering 17 Top-Up BSc programs and 30 postgraduate programs.

1. Top-up undergraduate degree programs are offered with durations ranging from 2 to 5 semesters.
2. The undergraduate degree durations can be 2 years or 3 years, depending on the program.
3. There are also postgraduate degree programs with a duration of 2 years.
4. Diploma and certificate programs have a standard duration of 2 years.
